3. Project Details
The Fenghuang Road Yellow River Bridge project was created to improve transportation connections between Jinan’s north and south banks of the Yellow River.
Instead of acting merely as a highway bridge, the project was planned as an all-encompassing urban transportation corridor. Large enough to support road traffic, it also allocates resources to public transit, rail travel, bicycles and pedestrians.
Engineered with three towers, double cable-planes and a self-anchor mechanism, the main suspension bridge features a span arrangement of:
70 m + 168 m + 428 m + 428 m + 168 m + 70 m
By installing 428-metre main spans, the Fenghuang Road Yellow River Bridge was able to pass over the main river channel without compromising navigation and hydraulics requirements. With a bridge deck that is 61.7 metres wide, extra difficulty was created in regards to structural design, steel fabrication and erection, as well as load distribution.
The north cross- dyke approach bridge also featured a main span of 245 metres long by implementing a continuous composite steel box-girder design.
