4. Engineering Challenges

4.1 Record-Setting Structural Dimensions

The bridge has two main spans of 428 metres (1,406 ft), as well as one of the widest decks in the world. This created unique structural-load and deformation-control challenges.

The layout also featured three towers that required accurate coordination of the main cables, suspenders, steel towers, composite girders, and anchorage systems.

4.2 Steel Structure Size

China Railway Baoji Bridge Group was responsible for steel structure works that included all three steel towers, the main bridge, in-water approach structures, and the northern cross-dyke approach bridge.

It’s reported that the total steel structure workload comprised around 71,400 tonnes of steel. That’s nearly enough steel to build ten Eiffel Towers! Producing and installing steel structure components of this size necessitated meticulous production planning and precise dimensional control.

4.3 Precise Prestressing

Performance of prestressing systems is impacted by the steel tendon, duct, and anchorage components being perfectly aligned. Issues with duct deformation or leakage can impact tendon installation and later grouting.

The anchorage system itself must also be able to transfer large prestressing forces into the concrete safely.

4.4 Coordinating Construction Activities

Steel fabrication, concrete placement, prestressing activities, bridge deck construction and site assembly were all coordinated on this project.

Delivering and manufacturing components on time was critical to the schedule so that installation activities could progress without delay.

4.5 Design for Durability

The bridge, which carries traffic over China’s Yellow River, was built to last. It will be exposed to traffic loads, thermal expansion and contraction, wind, moisture and the elements for decades to come.

As a result, the bridge’s prestressing system was required to have predictable material properties, protected tendon ducts, and ensure all ducts were completely grouted following tensioning.

5.Product Solution from Wanfeng

Wanfeng provides mainly two types of prestressing products.

5.1 Prestressing Anchor Bars

Prestressing anchor bars are threaded bars used to transfer and hold prestress force in concrete structures.

In bridges, these bars can be utilized in anchorage zones, temporary or permanent prestressing systems and structural connections that need precise high-strength tension control.

Characteristics of Prestressing Anchor Bars:

  • High tensile and yield strength
  • Full-threaded for adjustable anchorage location
  • Efficient stress transfer capability
  • Compatible with nuts, couplers and bearing plates
  • Dimensionally and mechanically consistent
  • Available in permanent and temporary prestressing applications.

Follow project drawings and technical specifications.

5.2 Corrugated Metal Ducts

Specifications of Corrugated Metal Ducts:

  • Dimensionally accurate inside and outside diameters
  • Slough resistance and local crushing resistant
  • Seamless or leak proof joint.
  • Easy to connect with grouting operations.
  • Smooth interior surface.

6. Project Outcome

Highly coordinated production and supply of prestressing anchor bars and corrugated metal ducts by Wanfeng enabled completion of this challenging Yellow River crossing.

  • Specifically, supplied items helped to create:
  • Stable ducting for prestressing tendons
  • Precise placement of anchorages
  • Successful prestress transfer
  • Sequenced construction/installation
  • Shielding of internal tendons post grouting
  • Long-term asset resilience

7.Engineering Significance

  • Notable accomplishments of this structure include:
  • Showcasing wide-berth suspension-bridge engineering

As a long-span bridge with a 61.7-metre-deck and large steel-box main girder, this bridge served as an important reference project regarding design, fabrication and installation.

9.FAQ

9.1 What kind of bridge is Fenghuang Road Yellow River Bridge?
The Fenghuang Road Yellow River Bridge is a three-tower, double-cable-plane, self-anchored suspension bridge. The main spans consist of two spans of 428 metres each. The bridge deck is 61.7 metres wide.

9.2 Where is Fenghuang Road Yellow River Bridge located?
Fenghuang Road Yellow River Bridge crosses the Yellow River in Jinan, Shandong Province, China. Jinan is the provincial capital of eastern China’s Shandong Province.

9.3 What products did Wanfeng provide?
Based on the project information we have, Wanfeng supplied prestressing anchor bars and corrugated metal ducts. Quantities and installation location were not provided.

9.4 What is a corrugated metal duct used for?
A corrugated metal duct is used to provide a enclosed duct or conduit for prestressing tendon or bars embedded in concrete. The duct is typically filled with grout after tensioning to bond the tendon or bars to the concrete and provide corrosion protection.

9.5 What is a prestressing anchor bar?
A prestressing anchor bar is a high strength threaded steel bar designed to introduce or maintain compressive stresses in concrete and other structural connections. Prestressing anchor bars are typically used with compatible nuts, couplers and bearing plates.
